Hair loss and thinning are issues that many people face at various stages of life. While this can be distressing, understanding the underlying causes can help in finding effective treatments and solutions. Below, we dive deeper into some of the common reasons for hair loss and thinning that we had had first hand experience with throughout our careers, including hormonal changes due to birth control, telogen effluvium, rapid weight loss and the rise of semaglutides, thyroid and hormonal imbalances, and the lingering effects of COVID-19.
Hormonal Changes Due to Birth Control
Hormones play a crucial role in hair growth and retention. Birth control pills, which alter your body’s hormonal balance, can have an impact on your hair. Some people experience hair thinning or shedding when they start or stop taking birth control pills. The fluctuation in hormone levels can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle, causing hair to enter the shedding phase prematurely.
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium (TE) is a condition where you experience temporary hair thinning and shedding that occurs when a significant number of hair follicles enter the shedding phase. Factors that cause this disruption are stress, surgery, and illness. The good news is that telogen effluvium is usually temporary, and hair often regrows on its own once the triggering event has passed.
Hair Loss Due to Rapid Weight Loss and Semaglutides
Rapid weight loss can cause nutritional deficiencies that may lead to hair thinning and shedding. The recent rise of medications like semaglutides, often used for diabetes management and weight loss, can also have an impact. Rapid changes in your body’s metabolic state can influence hair growth cycles, leading to hair loss.
Thyroid and Hormone Imbalances
Thyroid imbalances, whether hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, can significantly impact hair health. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, and any imbalance can disrupt the hair growth cycle. Other hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can also lead to hair thinning.
COVID-19
Many people have reported experiencing hair loss following a COVID-19 infection, a phenomenon dubbed “post-COVID hair loss.” This is another form of telogen effluvium, triggered by the physical and emotional stress caused by the illness. Hair shedding often appears a few months after recovering from COVID-19 and can last for several months.
Post-Partum Hair Loss
After childbirth, many women experience noticeable hair loss, known as post-partum hair loss. During pregnancy, elevated levels of hormones can prolong the growth phase of hair, resulting in thicker and more luscious hair. However, once hormonal levels return to normal post-delivery, hair that was in the prolonged growth phase enters the shedding phase all at once, leading to noticeable hair thinning. This type of hair loss is typically temporary and hair growth usually resumes to normal within a few months to a year.
